CEOS Newsletter March 2016

In December last year, France hosted the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) in its capital, Paris, where close to 50,000 participants (including 25,00 official delegates from the likes of government, intergovernmental organisations, UN agencies, NGOS and civil society) gathered with the aim of achieving a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, aimed at keeping global warming below 2°C. A team from ESA’s Climate Office, representing ESA, was there to inform, discuss and educate the communities that were gathered there about the important role that Earth observation plays in our understanding of climate change. Pascal Lecomte, the head of the Climate Office and the current Chair of the CEOS/CGMS Working Group on Climate, has written an article about their attendance in the March CEOS newsletter (#46).

The COP-21 agreement was signed by 175 countries on the 22nd April 2016. For more information, see http://www.cop21.gouv.fr/en/ or http://eohandbook.com/cop21/.

Also, keep an eye out for an additional article that Pascal has written for this newsletter on his role as the Working Group on Climate (WGClimate) Chair and their activities on the ECV inventory and climate architecture, involvement in COP-21, GCOS and UNFCCC/SBSTA and their support of the GEO2016 work plan.
