New Sea Ice Concentration Climate Data Record by the EUMETSAT OSI SAF

The EUMETSAT Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF) recently released a full reprocessing of their Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) Climate Data Record (CDR). Built on the SMMR, SSM/I, and SSMIS series of instruments, it covers years 1979 through 2015. The OSI SAF data record is designed to be compatible with the ESA CCI Sea Ice SIC CDR, which was announced earlier this year. In particular, the two projects shared the same algorithms, processing chains, and file format. The ESA CCI Sea Ice SIC CDR features higher spatial resolution than the OSI SAF CDR, but covers a shorter period (2002-2011, 2012-2015).

The ESA CCI Sea Ice activities significantly contributed to the new OSI SAF data record through additional R&D and new algorithms.

More information, documentation, and access to the OSI SAF data are found at the OSI SAF website.
