The 22nd session of the annual United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Conference of the Parties (UNFCCC COP), COP-22, will be held in Marrakech (Morocco) this month (7-18th November 2016). A key task for the COP is to review the national communications and emission inventories submitted by the Parties. With the information submitted, the COP can then assess the effects of the measures taken by the Parties and the progress made in achieving the ultimate objective of the convention.

This session will also be the first session of the COP serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement, unified last year at COP-21, which was put into force today!

7th CCI Collocation Meeting

The most recent annual CCI Collocation meeting, bringing together representatives from all fifteen CCI project teams, took place at ESRIN (Italy) earlier this month (4th - 6th October 2016). The main focus of this meeting was to report on the programme’s recent achievements, discuss major upcoming activities and address issues that have been important across the ECV projects.

A New CCI Ocean Colour Dataset Released

CCI Open Data Portal Dashboard and Data Search tool now live

The CCI Open Data Portal Dashboard and Data Search tools are now live.

The CCI Dashboard provides a high level view of the data sets within the CCI Open Data Portal archive, including key information for each product type, a quick link to download them via FTP and a graphical representation of their temporal coverage.

The Data Search tool can be used to search and download the data products in the CCI Open Data Portal archive. The CCI Data Search provides free text and faceted search options, allowing users to customise their search query. The resulting data can be downloaded via multiple data access methods


CCI Soil Moisture Featured in BAMS State of the Climate in 2015 Report

The CCI Soil Moisture project are proud to announce that an overview of recent and historical global CCI soil moisture conditions were published in the State of the Climate in 2015 Report, the authoritative annual summary of the global climate published as a supplement to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS).

Global Climate Observing System - Implementation Plan review

The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) are requesting comments from the scientific community on their new Implementation Plan.  The first GCOS Implementation Plan in 2004 concentrated mainly on the physical climate system and actions to enable the production of Essential Climate Variable datasets. This 2016 Plan also aims to incorporate broader climate policy observation requirements from the adaptation and mitigation communities. It will be submitted to the UNFCCC for its COP 22 meeting.

New Processing Technique Reveals More About Our Cryosphere

The adoption of the relatively new approach to processing altimetry data, known as swath altimetry, is transforming the outcome of altimetry studies on our cryosphere, including those within the CCI Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheet projects. The application of swath altimetry to CryoSat’s SARIn mode data importantly provides us with new information/insight into the topography of the Earth’s ice sheets which cannot be achieved using conventional altimetry processing techniques alone.

PolarGAP’s Field Campaign to Antarctica

The main objective of PolarGAP, an ESA-funded project, is to collect gravity data at the North and South poles, regions that were missed by the satellite GOCE due to orbit constraints, which can then be used to help complete a global model of the Earth’s gravitational field.
