Global Climate Observation: the road to the future 2-4 March 2016, Amsterdam

Climate observations are essential for understanding the complexities of the global climate system, indeed virtually all breakthroughs that have been made in understanding climate have come from observations. This is why it is crucial to make further progress towards achieving a fully implemented, sustainable, global observing system for climate.

Call for CCI Postdoctoral Positions

Call for CCI Postdoctoral Positions

The second Call for Research Proposals of the Living Planet Fellowship under the Climate Change Initiative (CCI) is now open.

The main objective of this initiative is to provide support to young researchers who have a doctoral degree and who would like to initiate a scientific career in the context of Earth Observation, Earth science and climate research. Candidate researchers shall submit research proposals addressing either or both of the following themes:

Living Planet Symposium 2016

ESA's Earth Observation conference - the Living Planet Symposium - is to be held from 9 - 13 May 2016 in Prague, Czech Republic. It will provide an opportunity to discuss the progress made in all branches of Earth observation and present the relevance of ESA's EO Programme to societal challenges, science and economy.

CCI Open Data Portal

CCI Open Data Portal - take our survey

What do you need from an Open Data Portal, delivering Essential Climate Variables from satellite data? Please take our survey so we can provide you with the best access to data and tools.

This survey forms part of a larger activity whose objective is to develop an Open Data Portal to provide a central point of harmonised access to mature Essential Climate Variable (ECV) datasets produced as part of ESA's Climate Change Initiative (CCI) programme.

Online Course - Climate from Space

Free online course: Monitoring climate from space

The European Space Agency have teamed up with Future Learn to put together a five week course on Monitoring Climate from Space. The course brings together leading experts and scientists from ESA and key European research centres, to explore the science that underpins Earth observation. Members of the Climate Change Initiative teams are involved to help bring the research done within the CCI programme to a wider audience.

The course looks at recent and current satellite missions that are providing an archive of essential data; and find out how this data is used in local and international policy and planning.

The course starts on the 8th June; to watch the trailer and register to take part, go to the Future Learn website

CCI at EGU 2015

CCI at the European Geophysical Union General Assembly 2015

The EGU General Assembly 2015 will bring together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary and space sciences. Several CCI projects are covening or co-convening sessions and giving talks, which are outlined below.

Copernicus workshop

Copernicus Workshop on Climate Observation Requirements
29 June - 2 July, ECMWF, Reading UK
Defining content for the Climate Data Store

This workshop may be of interest to the CCI community. The ECMWF are responsible for operating the Copernicus Climate Change Services (C3S). The aim of the C3S is to provide European stakeholders, including public authorities, businesses and citizens, with access to authoritative information about climate change and its impact on society.

Assessing Climate Observations session

Assessing Climate Observations: call for papers at Our Common Future

Abstract submission is now open for the following session on "Assessing Climate Observations" at Our Common Future Under Climate Change meeting in Paris, July 7-10, 2015. The deadline for submission of contributed talks is 10 March

Fire Products Available

Final version of Fire_cci Burned Area products available

Burned Area (BA) data generated in the Fire_cci project is now available online at The Burned Area data contains a pixel product (300m) and a grid product (0.5°), from 2006 - 2008.

The products were obtained from a combination of spectral information from MERIS and thermal information from MODIS active fires product.
